You know that line in the national anthem, “home of the brave”? Or how about that bumper sticker that says “freedom isn’t free”. Well guess what? They are right, in theory at least.
In practice we have come to expect that the less than 1% of men and women who serve in the military will do all the heavy lifting. But it does not work that way in a democracy. We all have to participate in a bit of bravery in order to remain free. No, you don’t have to go charging into machine gun fire or jumping out of an airplane, but you do have to make a choice to live your daily life with some modicum of courage.
Allow me to explain. The Left in America is a reflexive slave to regulation at all costs. Never mind that many of these regulations cost jobs and hinder economic growth. They will tell you that if the regulations can “save just one life!” then they are worth it. And of course, then comes the inevitable, “think of the children!” wailing. The Right for its part is just as guilty, but chooses to sacrifice different freedoms to the gods of fear and safety. They will tell you that we need to ban whole groups of people, repeatedly violate the 4th. Amendment, never question anyone with a badge and gun, and engage in costly wars that only create more terror because of the one in multi – million chance you might die in an act of terror. How nice that the two main political parties in America decided to give us full coverage in their attack on freedom through fear.
However we do have to be honest with ourselves on this subject. We all share responsibility for creating and indulging in a false climate of fear. We may pick different issues to be afraid of, but the result is the same: loss of freedom.
Common sense safety measures are fine. No one wants raw chemical factory discharge running into our water and rivers and no one wants to do away with border protection, intelligence capabilities and law enforcement. They are necessary to keep the citizens of this country safe. But when we decide that we want to worship at the altar of “Safety First!” 100% of the time, it will be “freedom last!” If we are to remain free, we Americans must live up to the words that we so proudly sing.
